Site Context

Amongst Sydney’s historical precinct, on Gadigal Land, is The Rocks Discovery Museum located in Kendall Lane. The museum is within a two-storey, semi-restored1850’s sandstone building. The museum houses conserved archaeological items chronologically exhibited, displaying First Nations history, original European settlement, and the metropolitan expansion.

Nearby The Rocks Discovery Museum is Glouster Walk, where you will find Foundation Park. It is beautifully conserved remains of 1870’s working-class terrace houses, carved into sandstone cliffs. This park provides children with the opportunity to immerse themselves in convict working-class life through play-based learning. Children can plunge into the archaeological evidence of the surrounds, which builds understanding of colonial customs amongst the working-class, convict workmanship and the cultural evolution over time. Connecting these two sites, offers children the education opportunity to tangibly experience life in early Sydney. (132 words).
